| For this assignment, I intended to emphasize the relation between the organic object and the machinery of the photocopier. The nature of
photocopying implies an eventual collage process, and I wanted my final piece to clearly illustrate this process, therefore I decided to work with only my object, the paper, and the machine to create a "pure" result of the mechanical process. I chose to work with a shell because of its unique and recognizable shape and pattern and also because the object itself reflects the process of photocopying and flyer-making. The spiral of the shell implies a creation based on continuous layer and overlapping, which were attributes I wanted to see in my final image. To imitate this overlapping, I ripped paper to make each image stand alone as a layer and to make the order of placing the images more apparent. The edges of the ripped images became very strong and bold,
creating a higher contrast that reflected the mechanical process nicely. The final image is nearly entirely black and white, giving a very raw and cold
feeling, transforming the original smooth, deliberate pattern of the shell into an almost unrecognizable image. |
