DESMA 171: Game Art/Culture

Course Description: This studio course examines gaming and interactivity with a wide lens, encouraging students to work on experimental projects in the area of gaming, breaking away from conventional screen based games. Students may choose to work on a complex and ambitious project of their choice allowing for a broad range of technical, conceptual and aesthetic experimentation. Possible final projects may involve developing custom physical interfaces for screen based games, game performances, interactive machinima, non digital games such as role playing games, game modding or hacking, non linear interactive fiction, etc.Class time will be divided between lectures on game art and experimental games, several technical lessons, playtests , critiques, and in class work time. The Professor and the TA will offer additional feedback and technical guidance on a per project basis.

Grading:

  • Group Project (30%)
  • Written paper 10%)
  • Class Participation (10 %)
  • Final Project (50%)

All reading notes, feedback forms and assignment PDFs must be uploaded to the class website before the beginning of class time on the day they are due unless a midnight deadline is indicated (as 24:00). Late projects and assignments will be penalized by one letter grade per day they are late.

Attendance: More than two absences without the professor’s prior permission will lower the participant’s final grade by one unit (e.g. an A will become an B). With each additional unexcused absence, the grade will drop an additional unit. Late projects will drop one letter grade, and will not be accepted if more than one week late

Required Materials: Some students may want to sign up for use of the fabrication lab on the second floor of the Broad Art Center. USe of the lab incurs a quarterly fee
