Special Topics in Media Arts: Contemporary Media Arts

Introduction to field of contemporary media arts, with focus on current creative practices and their historical roots. Through lecture, reading, and critical writing, students address central themes such as posthumanism, privacy in information age, technology and power, identity and virtuality, digital aesthetics, play, network politics, and nonhuman authorship. Students develop awareness and knowledge of contemporary media art practice, practitioners, and conceptual themes; and how they relate to history of media arts. Students establish common foundation to discuss works of media art, and baseline orientation to begin further conceptual and historical research.
