ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

This assignment consists of three (3) staggered rounds in which you will research, concept, define and execute clear and iconic messaging to rally people around an idea and message; and design touchpoints that scale a message into a movement.

ROUND ONE: THE MESSAGE

What do you want to Impact? In round one you will research and determine your topic, name your movement, hone a succinct message that defines the intent/mission of your intended impact, and design an iconic poster to symbolically represent your message and movement.

ROUND ONE DELIVERABLES

  • Movement Name: What are you called?
  • Mission Statement/Intent: What are you about? Say it in three sentences or less.
  • 17 x 22 inch Campaign Poster: How will I recognize you? This poster represents you and what you stand for.
  • Supporting Topic Research: Back up what you say with research, data, examples, and evidence.

ROUND ONE SCHEDULE // TUESDAY, OCT. 6TH – TUESDAY, OCT. 20TH

  • Tues, Oct. 6th
    • Receive assignment; initiate work
  • Thurs, Oct. 8th
    • DUE: selected topic, concept, draft mission statement & research for discussion
    • Post your work to the Miro board; plan on working in class.
  • Tues, Oct. 13th: Class Group Review: WIP message & design
    • DUE: Present your topic, name, mission statement & 3 distinct Poster design directions for critique.
    • Post your work to the Miro board.
  • Thurs, Oct. 15th: Break-out Group Review: WIP Poster Design
    • DUE: 2 Poster variation refinement directions
    • Post your work to the Miro board; plan on working in class individually & in break-out group.
  • Tues, Oct. 20th: Class Group Review: ROUND ONE FINAL
    • DUE: Final Round One poster design & mission statement.
    • Post your work to the Miro board.

ROUND TWO: THE CAMPAIGN

How will you share your message to generate impact? In round two you will extend your message and imagery to a variety of small, medium, and large-scale touchpoints that can be distributed to build impact. Think creatively and strategically about what kinds of items would be most effective for your campaign.

ROUND TWO DELIVERABLES

  • Three SMALL scale touchpoints
    • Intimate, view-in-the-hand small scale items
    • e.g. buttons, stickers, social memes, instagram/tik-tok post, postcard, advertising, etc.
  • Two MEDIUM scale touchpoints
    • Viewable from 3-ft, person to person scale.
    • e.g. apparel, water bottles, flags, posters, webpages, immersive personal experience etc.
  • One LARGE scale touchpoint
    • Viewable from 10+ feet away—across the room or across the street.
    • e.g. mural, billboard, signage, spectacular, backdrop/staging, immersive small group experience.

    • DUE: WIP review of Round Two S & M design concepts

ROUND THREE: THE MOVEMENT

Magnify and codify your message for the masses, and scale up for maximum impact. Develop an XL to XXL architectural scale installation, activation, event or experience concept, and design a handbook for your members that documents and tells the story of your movement, why it’s relevant, and connects it to a historical precedent

ROUND THREE DELIVERABLES

  • One XL-XXL scale installation/activation/event concept.
    • Rendering of installation concept and supporting design details (as needed)
    • e.g. festival stage, march, exhibit, performance, Times Square Spectacular, etc
  • Handbook, format and size of your choice. Content to include (but not limited to):
    • Name & mission statement
    • Campaign poster & touchpoint
    • Research & data point rationale for your movement
    • Movement membership info (how to get involved)
    • Article aligning your movement with a historical precedent (similarities & differences)

ROUND THREE SCHEDULE // THURSDAY, OCT. 22ND – TUESDAY, NOV. 3RD

  • Thurs, Oct. 22nd: Class Group Review; Round 3
    • DUE: Round Three XL-XXL activation/installation concept
    • Post your work to the Miro board; plan on working in class
  • Thurs, Oct. 29th: Individual Reviews: Handbook Working Crit
    • DUE: Review of live files: handbook design spreads in-progress
    • Share your screen in Break-out Room; plan on working in class
  • Tues, Nov. 3rd: Class Group Review: Round 3 & Project Final
    • DUE: Final presentation of your Impact Movement components: Statement; Poster; S, M, L, XL, XXL touchpoints; and final handbook
    • Post your work to the Miro board: Document and post final project images to class website and deliver final handbook PDF to assignment to Google Drive
