I decided to start off my testers with no instructions on how to control the game and just told them to try and figure out the controls. This worked reasonably well, they were able to figure out moving, aiming and shooting without too much trouble. They didn’t really notice when they accidentally boosted and so I had to tell them about that later. Weapon switching was not apparent at first eaither, probably because not all of the A-Y buttons do something yet. Once I was done forcing them to guess the controls I told them what all the buttons do and they were able to control their vehicals very easily. They said the movement felt very natural excepts sometimes they backed up when they didn’t mean too, so I guess I need to adjust the variable for how sensative the backup function is.
Then they started wandering around the map and got kinda lost until they passed by eachother and finally figured out the radar system. Once they knew where to find each other they got to blowing the crap out of each other pretty quickly and found it fairly satisfying. Though they did complain that they often didn’t notice when they were being hit. One playtester suggested having the controller shake when you get hit, Man do I feel silly for not having thought of that earlier. So simple and perfect.
They’re main complaint was that there was no sound, Shots were silent which added to the not being able to tell if they were being hit or hurting the other player. It also lended to the tanks movement not seeming to have and force behind it. “I feel like they are toy tanks” Not helped by the solid bright colors which I also need to fix with some sweet ass textures and better models.
They managed to avoid the tank sticking problem that happens when you push a tank into the level edge with another tank, but I know i need to fix that before i finish the game.
Overall it was a successful test that told me my gameplay was decently fun and easy to pick up for the most part other than a few ambiguous controls. And I Learned that rumble is a definite must have for my game. And sound to help sell the experience which i’ll have ready for class today.
