assignments

There are 4 individual projects, which could loosely be called themes. These can be done in any order:

  • Music videos for lock grooves. Pick 5 lock grooves from RRR 500 and make music videos for them. Have each lock grooves repeat at least 5 times in your video. Think about the sequence, the repetition, and the relationship between sound and image. If the audio loops, think about how the video might also loop (returning to where it began).
  • Still life, or the relationship between stillness and motion. Find a way to hold stillness and motion in tension with one another; for example, using video (which is about the moving image) to portray something that is motionless. This video might be a short loop or a longer piece, depending on the technique chosen.
  • Translations from poem to animation. A passage that evokes strong visual imagery should be translated somehow into a video. It shouldn’t be the entire poem, maybe just a particular moment. Do not use a song with words for the audio.
  • Crowds and Transformation in Delirium Tremens. Make something approaching a hallucination. Read this chapter about the hallucinations of alcoholics for some ideas, facts, and visions that should be useful.
  • There are 3 “techniques” that need to be primarily employed in the first three projects made. Once again, these can be done in any order.

  • Rotoscoping - manipulating video frame by frame
  • Stop motion - using a still camera in physical world
  • Keyframes - using AfterEffects to orchestrate an animation
  • The fourth project made can use any combination of these techniques.
