For the final project each student will select an excerpt of a dialogue or speech and animate it to reveal the voice of the speaker(s). These assignments deal with how controlling the typographic presentation in time can affect how we percieve and read textual messages.
The Spring 2009 course project focuses on research and design of immersive spaces with emphasis on 'light'. The students will begin by learning theories and practice around 'vision and seeing' and will be exposed to designers, scientists and media artists relevant to the class project. These include, United Visual Artists, James Turrell, Dan Flavin, Erwin Redl, Olafür Eliasson, Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, and many others. Through a series of exercises, they will become familiar and create works with various strategies and lighting technologies. For the final project the class will focus on developing ideas for light installations in relation to mobile devices.
Attendance is mandatory. Each unexcused absence will lower your grade one partial grade (A to A-). More than three absences without the instructors' permission (medical certificate might be requested), before the class meetings, will result in a 'fail' grade in the class. Class begins promptly at 2pm. At 2:05 you'll be marked 'tardy'. Three 'tardy' marks will be considered as one unexcused absence. Students must attend at least three D|MA-sponsored lectures during Spring quarter 2009.(F).
Each class you will be evaluated based on their concept, aesthetic qualities, and execution. All exercises must be completed in order to pass the course. Late assignments will reduce the assignent's grade by one partial grade (B to B-) each class they are late. Exercises are only considered as complete when they are accessible from the course website.
