Description
This course is organized to teach the aesthetics and fundamentals of motion and its application to design and media arts through an introduction of the basic concepts and tools for the design of moving images. In a series of assignments and a final group project, students will explore principles and aesthetics of moving imagery including timing, pacing, repetition, editing, composition, resolution, process, and the link between sound and image. Class time will include class discussions, student presentations, software and equipment tutorials and studio time for project development. Emphasis will be placed on developing a coherent spoken and visual vocabulary and its integration with artistic concepts.
Evaluation
Students will complete three assignments, plus one group project. Assignments and projects will be evaluated based on their aesthetic and conceptual qualities, innovative approach to the medium, and effort. All projects must be completed in order to pass the course. Late assignments will reduce the assignment's grade by one partial grade (B > B-) each class day they are late. Assignments are only considered as completed when they are accessible from the course website and presented by the student in class. All assignments and the group project must be submitted on a compilation DVD by Monday March 16th to complete the class. Attendance is mandatory. More than two absences without the instructor’s permission will decrease the overall grade by one partial grade for each additional missed class. Three times running late will be considered as one unexcused absence.
