DESCRIPTION:

Focus on moving image technology, history, and cultural significance from media archaeological perspective. Focus on media devices from instructor's collection, internationally one of most significant in its area. Devices demonstrated and experimented with, and their cultural roles discussed, supported by background readings. Purpose is to understand logic of devices underlying media cultural devices during past 500 years. Items discussed include magic lantern, peep show, camera obscura, philosophical animation toys, stereoscope, Mutoscope, and Kinora. Attention paid to issues such as media dispositve, topos, and cultural series. Media archaeology is emerging approach pioneered by instructor since 1990s.
