Exercise 1 : 200 word response on objective and subjective relationship to color – due June 29

Purchase : Class materials

Create : Folder titled ‘FIRST LAST NAME’ in course cloud

TH JUNE 29 Lecture , color theory and color systems (Munsell Color Notation)

Read : Color, John F Pile

Exercise  2 : Paint a color wheel, a tone scale and shade scale – due July 6

Assignment 1  : Watch the sunset , take a photos and bring back 1 item. Print and bring to class – due July 6

Suggested locations : Getty Villa, Parking structure roof, Pacific Coast Highway, Griffith Park

WEEK 2

T  JULY 4 NO CLASS

TH JULY 6 Lecture ,  artists and designers working with color

Studio: Pulling pigments from sunset photos. Create 4 color palettes : monochromatic, analogous, triad, complimentary

Homework : Finish Assignment 1

WEEK 3

T  JULY 11 Assignment 1 Due , critique

Lecture , working with color in Adobe Illustrator

Studio : Matching paint and digital swatches, color steps and blending

Guest : Will Davis , materiality of color + history and politics of pigment in 15th century

Homework : Replicate your sunset palettes in Illustrator using the color tool.

TH JULY 13 Lecture, Josef Albers techniques

Studio : Vibrating color, subtractive color, reversed ground

Exercise 3: With your digital palettes, create a series of compositions based on Josef Albers exercises. Submit as PDF. Due July 18.

F JULY 14 Fieldtrip : Underground Museum , Artists of Color

We will meet at Underground Museum at 12:00 pm and then proceed as a group to view the show, then discuss the work as a class afterwards.

WEEK 4

T  JULY 18 Display of Joseph Albers tests, discussion of techniques

Lecture, storytelling and synesthesia

Studio : Sketching soundscapes, establishing patterns

Assignment 2 : Soundscape as pattern – visit a new site and create a sketch based on the soundscape. 

TH JULY 20 Lecture, digital sketching in Adobe Illustrator

Guest : Kelynn Smith , color forecasting and dye process

Guest : Erin Garcia , artist talk

Exercise 4 : Transfer sketch into Illustrator and create 5 different iterations of the composition.

WEEK 5

T  JULY 25 Guest : Israel Gutierrez, color printing

Studio : Working on final compositions

TH JULY 27 Studio : Print tests + finalizing compositions

WEEK 6

T  AUGUST 1 Studio :  Finalizing compositions + printing

TH AUGUST 3 Final critique
