MICRO-COMMUNITIES

Explore a distinct LA neighborhood (any one but Westwood). Make it small enough to take in - not "East LA" but rather Boyle Heights, not all of Venice but instead Speedway or the Canals.
Build a scrap book: document the major avenues, the important corners, the distinctive buildings, public spaces, even the people that exemplify this micro-community's uniqueness. Document your findings via photography, video, sketching, painting, etc. Jot down notes. Be a flaneur or flaneuse (look this word up, search via the names Walter Benjamin and Charles Baudelaire).
Extra credit if you can weave in a song about Los Angeles that amplifies your finding - start at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_about_Los_Angeles
